Florida Leaders Stung as Trump Slashes Everglades, Reservoir Funding

Florida's three top leaders -- both U.S. senators and the governor, Republicans all -- believed Florida had a commitment from President Trump not to short funding for Everglades restoration in his new proposed budget. But when the budget surfaced earlier this week, it provided $63 million in Everglades funding, falling well short of the $200 million Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott and Gov. Ron DeSantis sought.

See the full text of Rubio, Scott and DeSantis' Feb. 11 letter to the president here.

The budget doesn’t include money for the EAA Everglades Reservoir, as first proposed by former state Senate President Joe Negron in SB 50, and it slashes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' spending by 31 percent on a host of restoration projects, the Miami Herald reported.

On Wednesday Rubio and Scott, with U.S. Reps. Brian Mast of Palm City, and Francis Rooney of Naples combined on a joint statement to the president.

“For the third year in a row, the administration’s budget request underfunds critical projects in South Florida,” wrote the Florida GOP lawmakers.

“It is incredibly short-sighted to continue to underfund a series of projects that are absolutely necessary to ensure the environmental sustainability and economic vitality of one of the most dynamic regions of our nation,” they said. “Everglades restoration is critically important to the State of Florida and enjoys broad bipartisan support in Congress. Failing to meet the basic federal funding commitments to restore the Everglades is contrary to the administration’s goal of improving project partnerships and cost-sharing with states."

Said the letter, "Congress and the Army Corps of Engineers envisioned a $200 million per year federal commitment when the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan was first authorized nearly 20 years ago, and it is time for the administration to meet that commitment.”

The new South Florida Water Management District Governing Board meets for the first time Thursday, and likely the president's budget will be a topic for discussion.

Surprise, surprise, Spanky's true collors shine through... He has to slash and burn b/c his benefit the rich tax cuts are exploding the deficit at trillions per year...the idiots will keep voting for their really show phony superhero and keep buying all his BS like the fools they are. Ah, the uneducated majority continues to shine like tarnish...

I'm a little disappointed in this but I think he's doing a great job as a whole.

The President's budget proposal is just that, a proposal. Congress has the power to spend, not the Liar-in-Chief.

Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle! Trump is trash and DeSantis, Scott, and Rubio are just stupid for putting their eggs in his basket. ANY candidate who runs for president in 2020 ... Democratic or Republican ... will undoubtedly be far, Far, FAR better in EVERY way than the current chump occupying the Oval Office.

EXTRA ! EXTRA ! READ ALL ABOUT IT !!!! "CONGRESSIONAL SNAKES" PROTEST INTENTIONAL STARVATION OF EVERGLADES BURMESE BOA CONSTRICTORS !" Seems "cooler heads" disdained "throwing good money after bad", and ordered common sense re-evaluation... "Tax Coffers remain thankfully solvent on this particular issue for the foreseeable future", says "John Q. Public". Further "public funds respite" to be considered by so called "cooler heads"... STAY TUNED !

How many EPA's do we need? Dozens? Every state has an EPA, federal EPA should be abolished. President Trump is trimming all bloated, ineffective federal agencies. Way overdue.

Do you really think allowing another state to decide the quality of air and water when it leaves that state and entets Florida? Case in point. The decades long dispute over water not flow from Georgia and Alabama, which has had a serious negative effect on Appalatche(sp) and the oyster industry. Or the slower flows in the Floridian Aquifer. Which under your plan Georgia could pollute and destroy our drinking water.

Well... we asked for 200 million (a nice, round and cushy number)... We got a "measley" 63 million... Let me remind our Legislators, especially Senator Scott, what the state of FL had to do when he was first elected Governor... It seems that, now that the shoe is on the other foot, some badly needed belt tightening is a reason for screaming "NOT MY PROGRAM!!!" ... Reigning in the obtusely excessive Federal spending starts at home, y'all.

Can you really be surprised by a man who has done his best to dismantle the EPA and any kind of environmental protection? Get a grip.

Trump "dismantles" just because he can. MAGA = Morons Are Governing America!

"Environmental Protection" Agency is a misnomer,... So very many "Special Interest" groups populate this "club", ALL trying to be "the tail wagging the dog" to gain a BIGGER share of your taxes... And EVERY ONE OF THEM has a personal "in" with a "Congress person" ( elected, or otherwise ): Do YOU have a "personal friend" like that, there ??? (I doubt you have the necessary money to "trade" for a personal panderer traversing those exalted HALLS,.... In which case, YOUR TAXES are "always up for grabs"...

C Breeze - Once again you sound off mindlessly. We need a functioning (non Trump) EPA - if for no other reason than to monitor your toxic comments.

"Whack"!
